Winter Cocktails

December 24, 2018

Whether you love it or hate it, the inevitable has arrived in Boston: Winter. For a few months out of the year, New Englanders prepare for winter by stocking up on winter attire, ice melt, hand warmers, and… yup, alcohol.

It’s been said that those who live in colder climates consume more alcohol than those who live in warmer climates. Why? Alcohol actually increases warm blood flow in the skin, so booze keeps you nice and warm.

As we approach the cold season, we add wintery drinks to our cocktail menu to help warm up our guests. In addition to hot drinks, we select cocktails with flavor profiles that are in line with the winter season: cinnamon, rosemary, peppermint, etc. Below are a few of our favorite cocktails from our winter menu as well as recipes so that you can keep warm at home when you’re not in your favorite local tasting room.

Hot Toddy

Feeling under the weather? A Hot Toddy will help! This delicious cocktail is typically made with either a Scotch, Bourbon, or Brandy, includes honey, herbs, spices, and is served hot. It’s a quintessential winter cocktail and works wonderfully well with our New England peat-smoked whiskey.

• 2oz Short Path Distillery Peated Whiskey
• .25oz Lemon
• .75oz Honey
• Hot Water

Add first three ingredients into a coffee glass or mug and top with hot water. Garnish with lemon and/or cinnamon stick.

Snow Day

We describe this drink as a boozy hot chocolate. It’s sweet, tasty, and provides an adult twist on a childhood winter classic. Use our Triple Sec to give it an orange-forward taste, or switch the Triple Sec out for Creme de Menthe to give it a minty twist. Either way, the end result will bring you to a winter wonderland.

• 2oz Short Path Distillery Triple Sec or Creme de Menthe
• .25oz Short Path Distillery Rum
• .25oz Heavy Cream
• 1oz Chocolate Syrup
• Hot Water

Add first four ingredients into a coffee glass or mug and top with hot water. Garnish with marshmallows.

Rosemary’s Baby

Rosemary and juniper were meant to go together. Our Winter Gin provides woodsy, earthy character with bright pine and citrus notes. It’s a winter seasonal favorite and adds a nice savory flavor profile to any cocktail. Rosemary’s Baby will not disappoint.

• 2oz Short Path Distillery Winter Gin
• 1oz Cranberry Juice
• 1oz Fig Syrup
• .25oz Lime

Add all ingredients to a shaker, add ice, and shake until chilled. Double strain into a martini glass. Garnish with rosemary sprig.
