Blueberry Barren

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When life gives you gin-soaked blueberries… you make Blueberry Barren!

After we finished making last year’s blueberry-infused Summer Gin, we had several hundred pounds of gin-soaked blueberries left over after bottling. Not being the types to let anything go to waste, we saved them all and developed Blueberry Barren, an herbal blueberry liquor aged in oak barrels and named after the fields in Maine where blueberries are grown.
To make it, we pressed the blueberries like grapes and let the resulting blueberry gin liqueur mellow in barrels for 4 months. The resulting liqueur is then proofed down to 30% ABV and lightly sweetened with local honey before bottling. Savory herbs, spiced barrel notes, blueberry sweetness, and a delicate bitterness all present themselves in a versatile flavor profile that can be used in a cocktail which enhances any one of these qualities. Or do what we do — sip it chilled with an orange slice, or in a spritzer with soda water and lemon.
